Alpacas ... an alternative livestock

4 boys
Gentle and sociable, smart and alert, easy to care for and economical to feed, alpacas offer an alternative to traditional livestock, breaking down barriers that prevent some from enjoying the ranching lifestyle.

Alpacas
are easy
to care for

Alpacas are small and easy livestock to maintain. They are safe and pleasant to be around and can be handled by children. Their soft humming is a naturally soothing sound befitting their gentle nature. They do not bite or butt, and they do not have the teeth, horns, hooves, or claws to do serious injury.

Fencing keeps your investment in and predators out. They should have basic shelter for protection from heat and bad weather. They should be shorn once yearly, and their toenails and teeth trimmed periodically. Certain annual vaccinations are needed.

Alpacas
do not
require a
lot of land

Five to ten alpacas can be kept per acre. Having only lower teeth, alpacas graze gently, nibbling tender grass rather than pulling it out by the roots. Weighing an average of 150-175 pounds, and having padded feet rather than hooves, they don't disturb the soil or beat down a pasture like heavier livestock. Additionally, many breeders are happy to provide boarding of your alpacas for a small cost, enabling new owners or urban dwellers to begin building their herds without owning the ranch yet.

Alpacas
are raised
for fiber,
not meat

Raising alpacas is a no-kill enterprise. Shorn of their luxurious fleece once a year, alpacas provide income without heartache. Your herd and your fiber business continue to grow yearly, and your emotional attachment to your animals is justified and unchallenged.
